Energetic Gram Flour Soup (Kadhi)

This is a very beginner friendly recipe, and with these step-by-step instructions you can make it in few minutes.

Material (Ingredients)

  • 1 tbs gram flour
  • 2 tbs Greek yogurt – homemade yogurt works best
  • ½ tsp ghee or oil of your choice
  • Pinch of Hing (asafetida)
  • ½ green chili finely chopped
  • About pea size of finely grated ginger
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 Currey leaves (optional)
  • Cilantro for garnish (optional)
  • ½ tsp jaggery (optional)
  • ½ tsp fenugreek seeds (optional)
  • Pinch of turmeric (optional)

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk gram flour and yogurt to make a smooth paste.
  2. Once you have a smooth paste, add a cup of water and mix it.
  3. In a pan on stovetop at low-medium heat, add ghee.
  4. When ghee is warmed up, add curry leaves & hing (you may add fenugreek seeds if you have).
  5. Pour the liquid you made, chili-ginger & salt (turmeric and jaggery if you want to balance sour taste).
  6. Bring it to boil, and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes stirring intermittently.
  7. Take it off the stovetop and garnish.

Tips

  • Soup too thin: Simmer longer or add ½ teaspoon extra gram flour (mixed with warm water first).
  • Soup too thick: Add a splash of hot water to adjust consistency.
  • Yogurt curdling: Make sure the heat is medium‑low when adding the mixture, and whisk well before pouring.
  • Too spicy: Reduce ginger‑chili paste.

You can make this soup in advance or store in refrigerator for later use; it will be a bit thicker than you made, add a tbs or two of water and bring it to boil prior to use.
